After the 45 years of establishment and development (October 6, 1969 - October 6, 2014), going through the fierce war times to the industrialization and modernization of the country, the Northern Power Corporation under the Electricity of Vietnam (EVN NPC) has made great contributions to the construction, protection and economic development of the country.
Efforts to overcome difficulties
EVN NPC formerly known as the Power Company No 1 was established on October 6, 1969 during the hard times of the country’s anti-US war. Initial tasks of the company were to manage the entire electrical system, build and develop power resources and grids to serve the socioeconomic development in the northern region and one part of the central region.
EVN NPC Director Nguyen Phuc Vinh said in the very difficult times with shortage of facilities and backward equipment devastated by the war, the company took initiatives in working out solutions and plans to resume production, consolidated management and organization structures to maintain production, fight the war and construct, expand new electricity works of higher capacities to serve the country’s economic development demand.

From 1976-1995, the company continued to restore and expand the available power facilities and at the same time constructed and put into operation many thermal and hydro electricity works like Pha Lai and Hoa Binh. It also upgraded grid systems and was responsible for helping electricity companies in the central and southern regions.
In 1995, to restructure the power industry to suit the socioeconomic strategy in the new period, the Power Company No 1 and other attached units were moved to the Vietnam Electricity Corporation (now is the Vietnam Electricity Group). Since then, it started a new development period implementing a power trading mechanism and developing a grid system in the northern region including 27 cities and provinces, mainly the plain, rural and remote areas. The company guaranteed power supplies and served in the best way production and business activities and the local people’s lives and posted an annual average growth of 10.3-13 percent.
The 45-year landmark
Reports of the EVN NPC showed that, so far the company has connected 100 percent of the districts, 99 percent of the communes and 97 percent of the households to the national grid. The company has an annual average growth of 11-12 percent and creates stable jobs for laborers with average income per capita growth of 7-8 percent per year. In 2013, its commercial power output reached 33.570 billion kWh, earning revenue of VND46.7 trillion. The number of customers of EVN NPC reached 7.6 million, accounting for one third of EVN’s customers.
Nguyen Phuc Vinh also said apart from business tasks, EVN NPC also has to implement big targets and programs assigned by the government and party regarding power connection and trading to every region, contributing to reducing poverty, promoting the plan to electrify the countryside and agriculture and better implementing the new rural area construction programs.
To recognize great achievements of EVN NPC on its length of road over the past 45 years, the company was awarded noble prices by the party and state such as the “First Class Independence Medal” and Hero of Labor in the renovation period”.
State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan said that the immediate tasks remain difficult and heavy, but with the glorious tradition and motto “For the development of the community” EVNNPC is believed to make more contributions to the industrialization and modernization of the country and deserves the rewards granted by the party, state and government awarded, as well as to be the cradle of Vietnam’s power industry./.
