Denmark helps develop wind power

At a wind energy seminar organized by the Embassy of Denmark in Hanoi on December 8, the Vestas Wind Systems Company, a pioneer in the development of wind power in Vietnam, committed to continuing cooperation with its Vietnamese partners and providing effective wind power solutions for Vietnam.

Abundant potential
According to the World Bank’s evaluation of Vietnam’s wind power potential, the tropical monsoon climate here is very good for wind power generation. In fact, Vietnam is one of the leading countries in terms of wind power potential in Southeast Asia, with an estimated total capacity of approximately 513,360MW, which is 10 fold the total power demand estimated for 2020. If Vietnam fully invests to exploit the potential, it can generate about 1,000MW by 2020, achieve 6,200MW by 2030 and increase the proportion of electricity generated by wind power from about 0.7 percent by 2020 to 2.4 percent by 2030.
However, according to Dr. Pham Thi Thanh Binh from the Institute of World Economics and Politics (IWEP), Vietnam’s ability to exploit wind power remains very poor, at about 55MW, which is incommensurate with the country’s potential needs for the future. One of the major reasons for the inefficient exploitation of wind energy resources here is limited financial resources.
Willing to cooperate and support
According to the Danish Ambassador to Vietnam, John Nielsen, Denmark has witnessed more than 30 years of economic growth without increasing its energy use, while at the same time reducing its CO² emissions. Denmark is currently one of the world’s leaders in wind power energy, with wind power accounting for more than 33 percent of the total power volume. Denmark-based Vestas Wind Systems Company has offered its Vietnamese partners a brighter and greener future through its state-of-the-art wind power technology and effective financial solutions.

In 2011, the company established the first commercial wind farm in Vietnam on Phu Quy Island in Binh Thuan Province, including three V80-2.0MW turbines with a total output of 6MW and a generating capacity of about 27.3 million kWh per year. This farm entered commercial operation in 2012 with full operational capacity reaching 59 percent.
Rapid economic growth in Vietnam has been accompanied by an increased need for large amounts of energy. To exploit energy resources – especially wind power – safely, simply, inexpensively, and in an environmentally-friendly way is a target shared by countries worldwide, including Vietnam. President of Vestas for Asia Pacific and China, Chris Beaufait said, “We appreciate the efforts of the Vietnamese government in the strategic development of wind energy. As a pioneer in the development of wind power in Vietnam, we are committed to continuing to provide effective wind energy development solutions for Vietnam and sharing our wind power experience and knowledge with Vietnamese partners.”
In addition to Vestas, representatives from Denmark’s Export Credit Agency (EKF) and Investment Fund for Developing Countries (IFU) have also pledged to share their experience in seeking financial sources to develop wind energy here, and have expressed their willingness to assist wind power investors when encountering problems in finance./.
